“On silent wings
the owl sweeps by
in the quiet moonlit night.
A lone stallion
rears in greeting
his way of taking flight.”
~ Kim McElroy
It seems whenever I am starting a kindred spirits painting that I don’t need to seek out the idea for which animal to paint, the animal just appears in my life. In this case, a barn owl flew past my car windshield one night, and then I unexpectedly encountered one up close held on the hand of a volunteer at a zoo in Santa Barbara. Then I knew I had to paint this piece. The owl’s mystical presence, and this horse’s wild power were perfect compliments to each other.
